THE QUEENSLAND CONSUMERS' ASSOCIATION
SEEKS YOUR VIEWS ON GROCERY UNIT PRICING

Have you noticed anything different about shelf labels in supermarkets recently?

Both Woolworths and Aldi are now showing the unit prices for a number of goods they are selling (the unit price is the price per unit of measure, for example $1.55 per 100g for a 200g tin of Milo costing $3.10).

Unit prices are very helpful for consumers. But only if they can easily NOTICE, READ, and USE the information.

Queensland Consumers’ Association – who lobbied for unit pricing – want to know what consumers think about the systems in place at Woolworths and Aldi. This will help advocacy for a best practice compulsory national system. (The Government is in the process of developing a mandatory code at the moment.)

Please email your views to unitpricing@australiamail.com

QCA is keen to find out:

o        Are the font sizes showing the unit price BIG enough for people to easily NOTICE and READ?

o        Are the units of measure easy to USE? Supermarkets are showing the unit prices per 100 gram, rather than per kilogram for example. Smaller units mean that price differences are not as obvious. You can see why supermarkets might do it this way, but is this still useful for consumers when making comparisons?

Your views on any other aspects of unit pricing are welcome too.
